Bimatoprost is an ophthalmic solution manufactured by Allergan. It
is generally prescribed to patients who have glaucoma or ocular
hypertension conditions. It is available under the brand name
Lumigan. It can stop glaucoma from progressing and also bring down
excessive pressure in the eye.
Bimatoprost belongs to a medication class that is known
prostaglandin analogue; other medications in this class include
timolol, latanoprost and dorzolamide. All of these medications are
prescribed for keeping pressure within the eyeball in check. The
pressure builds up when aqueous humour, the fluid which keeps the
eye moist starts accumulating instead of draining away.
The accumulation is a result of blockage in the trabecular meshwork
channels. If the pressure is not reduced, it can lead to optic nerve
damage and vision loss. Being a prostaglandin analogue, Lumigan
emulates the action of naturally occurring prostaglandin and removes
the blockage of the meshwork channels to allow aqueous humour to
drain away. This reduces intraocular pressure and protects the eye.
Another action of bimatoprost is on the eyelashes; it increases the
rate and volume of growth of eyelashes. Allergan has received FDA
approval to market bimatoprost as a cosmetic prescription medication
under the brand name Latisse for treating eyelash insufficiency.
Though its action is unclear, Latisse application leads to the
development of lush, heavy, and long eyelashes.
Both Lumigan and Latisse have been found extremely effective in
treating the conditions for which they are prescribed. Since they
are prescription medications, you should ensure that you get proper
medical advice before you start using either one.
